One day, a friend of mine told me that she had made Fried Green Tomato BLTs for her and her husband. Immediately, I wanted to go home and make one for myself. Sadly, this was not possible for two reasons; I was at work and I didn’t have any of the ingredients for it at home.
So when I went to the farmers’ market last week, (see post: Field Trippin’: The Farmers’ Market), I decided to pick up some green tomatoes and try making one myself. Of course, I had to make my BLT a tad bit healthier (although fried is never really healthy), so I opted to use turkey bacon, spinach and sprouted grain bread in my recipe.
Let me tell you, a BLT with fried green tomatoes in it is absolutely mouth-watering!
WHAT YOU NEED:
For the Sandwich:
– A package of Turkey Bacon (I used Applegate Naturals Uncured Turkey Bacon)
– Bread, whatever kind you prefer
– Fresh Spinach
– Naturally Fresh Jalapeno Ranch dressing, for drizzling on sandwich
For the Fried Green Tomatoes:
– 1/2 cup White Wheat Flour
– 1 cup Italian Style Bread Crumbs
– 1 tsp Italian Seasoning
– 1/2 tsp Garlic Salt
– 1/2 tsp Ground Black Pepper
– 1/2 cup of Milk
– 1 tbsp Hot Sauce
– 1 Egg
– Extra Virgin Olive Oil, for frying
– 1 large Green Tomato
**This recipe makes at least 3 sandwiches.
Add bread crumbs, flour, garlic salt, black pepper and Italian seasoning together in a large mixing bowl.
Stir ingredients together and set bowl aside.
In another large mixing bowl, add egg, milk and hot sauce.
Stir ingredients together and also set this bowl aside.
Cut tomato into slices and set aside.
In a large frying pan, pour enough olive oil to cover the bottom of pan.
Turn burner on medium heat.
Once the oil gets hot, start breading tomatoes to fry.
To bread, dip the tomato slice in the egg mixture and coat well.
Then place the coated tomato in the bread crumb mixture and also coat well.
Place the breaded tomato in the frying pan.
Cook both sides of the tomato evenly, until golden brown.
Place cooked tomatoes on a plate covered with a paper towel. (This soaks up excess oil.)
Discard extra bread crumbs and egg mixture.
Cook bacon according to the package’s directions and desired crispness.
Preheat oven or toaster oven to 350 degrees.
Place bread on baking tray.
Assemble sandwich, starting with the spinach on the bottom.
Then add the fried green tomatoes.
Place the bacon on top of the fried green tomatoes.
Drizzle the sandwich with the jalapeno ranch dressing.
Put other slice of bread on top of sandwich and cook in oven/toaster for about 10 minutes or until bread is toasted.
Cut in half, if desired, and enjoy!
Hope you enjoy this classic sandwich with a Southern twist – because I sure did! Thank you Teri, for the culinary inspiration.
